Most homes in Kenya, especially rural Kenya, do not
have electricity, and even if they do, most households cannot afford
to buy, let alone run, a refrigerator.
Perishable food is bought daily, meat is killed when
it is needed and all the animal has to be eaten upon slaughter.
We have designed a simply-made food
cooler that uses capillary action of water through porous clay
and evaporation. The area inside the cooler is considerably cooler
than the ambient air, and the food contained in it is also protected
from flies.
