A by-product of collecting methane for fuel is a high
quality, sterile fertiliser. So a farmer or smallholder using methane
for cooking or to power a generator or water pump, gets first-rate
fertiliser - for free!
KCSI is studying the possibility of organic waste collection
on a municipality-wide scale, with a view to high capacity composting,
giving the local residents access to good compost at very reasonable
prices. It will also ensure that a town is cleaner (and therefore
healthier), especially in areas where food markets and street vendors
sell their produce.

ACON is carrying out some interesting trials with composted
water hyacinth, which of course is a major pest in the waterways of
Kenya, particularly Lake Victoria.
Presently, they are testing water hyacinth compost
with other fertilisers to find the best mix.
ACON will soon be boasting a web site with their results
to date. Watch this space.
